Surrender
In some casinos, the player is allowed to forfeit
half of his or her bet if the player does not want to play against the
dealer's hand.
If the player says "surrender" the dealer will remove the players cards
and half the players original bet.
There are two types of surrender, Early Surrender and Late Surrender.
Early Surrender is no longer available. It allowed the player to surrender
before the dealer had revealed his down, or "hole" card (thus allowing
surrender even if the dealer had a Blackjack). However, casinos
found this option provided too big an advantage to the player and abolished
the rule.
Late Surrender is still an option at most casinos. It allows the player to
throw in his or her hand after confirmation that the dealer does not have
Blackjack. The player must be holding a hand with a lower value than 21 to
surrender.
Late Surrender is a good strategy if, after viewing the dealers up-card as
well as their own, the player decides the odds are against them and chooses
to discontinue with their hand.
